Houston offers tremendous choices of homes in distinct and interesting communities. The information below was obtained from various sources including the web site of the City of Houston’s Super Neighborhoods, local chambers of commerce and others. It will provide you with a very brief overview of many of the communities in and around Houston. Our agents are eager to provide specific information about these neighborhoods and many others not mentioned. Simply contact one of our many offices throughout greater Houston, or our Relocation Department at 800-856-7797.

INNER LOOP

The area within Loop 610 contains some of the city’s most desired neighborhoods because of its proximity to Downtown Houston and the Texas Medical Center. The area is adorned with tree-lined streets and many of the city’s finer restaurants. Wide spectrums of housing, ranging from wood-frame bungalows to stately mansions, are available within Loop 610.

Downtown Houston is becoming a favorite place to live for young professionals and “empty nesters” because of its proximity to downtown businesses and the Houston Theater District. Studies project there will be 10,000 residences by 2010. Loft living is available in refurbished, turn-of-the-century buildings, such as the Bayou Lofts, Kirby Lofts, Franklin Lofts, Capital Lofts, Keystone Lofts, Commerce Towers and the San Jacinto Lofts. New construction residential living in the area is available at The Lofts at the Ballpark, One Park Place, Sabine Street Lofts and The Stanford. In addition to residential loft construction, there are a number of new office towers, entertainment venues, restaurants and retail outlets now complete or under construction.

Thanks to the renewal and redevelopment of Downtown, the light rail system connecting areas from Downtown through the Medical Center, and the plethora of “destination” activities spurred by the many performance venues as well as Minute Maid Park, Toyota Center, the Convention Center, and the extremely popular city park, Discovery Green, there has been a renaissance in all the surrounding areas.

Once a fashionable residential district, Midtown became a mix of older homes, small apartment buildings and low-rise commercial buildings. Now, luxury apartment and townhouse construction have begun to flourish and it has become a hub of popular restaurants and clubs. Many near Eastside neighborhoods, with numerous examples of outstanding architecture, are enjoying a revival and redevelopment – among them Eastwood and Idylwood.

To the northwest of Downtown The Heights and nearby Woodland Heights are also experiencing a dramatic revitalization. The Heights has Houston’s largest concentration of historic homes. The first “master-planned community” in Texas, the area offers a small-town environment with grand Victorian homes and charming cottages. Bed and breakfast inns, antique shops and art galleries line Heights Boulevard and Yale Street. Many new homes are being built to match these neighborhoods’ Victorian-style homes. Their affordability and easy access to downtown attract many employees in the area.

Across Buffalo Bayou, the Memorial Park/Washington Avenue area stretches from the west side of the northern edge of Downtown to the West Loop. The community that includes Camp Logan/Rice Military, Arlington Court, and Crestwood covers over 5,081 acres and our fabulous Memorial Park is considered one of the city’s primary environmental assets. Residential areas adjacent to the park are being redeveloped with high-end single-family homes and townhomes.

Home to the arts, artists, and academia, the Montrose area enjoys rich cultural and ethnic diversity. Bounded on the north by Buffalo Bayou, the area includes the Museum District. Many restaurants, eclectic boutiques and small galleries maintain the unique flavor of this area. Two-bedroom brick bungalows once characterized the area but many have been razed to make room for newer two and three story townhomes. In Courtland Place, a one block community of historical mansions on either side of a graceful esplanade, all of the homes are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Other nearby neighborhoods include Westmoreland, where many historic mansions still remain, as well as Avondale and Cherryhurst.
